You Look Familiar, Yet Different
Well, it happened! Trades galore was the motif all around the Dallas area as the maverick general manager, LJ Maverick, finally pulled the trigger on some deals that solidify the team's future. At least for now.
The biggest trade saw all-world talent Kevin Durant get shipped out to the Portland Thunder (yes, that's correct and aptly so lol) in a three-team deal that saw Brandon Ingram, Bobby Portis and Monte Morris and a bevy of draft stock come to Dallas. Another all-world talent was shipped to the New York Knicks in the deal. That talent was Kawhi Leonard. So, in a manner of speaking, this was THE blockbuster deal of the deadline. Although, it was agreed upon about a week before the deadline. Letting go of such a talent was hard decision for LJ Maverick but one of necessity. Durant has not shown signs of losing his talent, but his body is now showing the inevitable, slowing down and injuries due to age. It was time to get what the team could for Durant. The draft stock included was more than enough to push the decision over the top.
Another trade saw oft-injured Kristaps Porzingis, Kevon Looney and Patrick Mills sent to the Oklahoma City Thunder (yes, two Thunder trades) for Julius Randle, Kemba Walker and JaMychal Green. The team saw it necessary to unload the Unicorn's contract as he did not meet expectations with the team being injured more than not. This essentially reunites Ingram and Randle from their days on the NBA's Lakers.
Other trades saw Jalen Brunson come in from the Washington Wizards for returning-from-injury Victor Oladipo and a late 2nd rounder. JaeSean Tate comes over in another three team deal that saw Chuma Okeke traded to the Milwaukee Bucks while Mitchell Robinson headed to the Memphis Grizzlies. Lastly, the Mavericks rid on UFAs Elfrid Payton and Wayne Ellington and a 1st rounder for injured swingman Terence Davis, who figures to be a contributor next season.
