Houston Update
Sending out Harrison Barnes, TJ McConnell, and Chris Duarte out for free
With Tyrese Haliburton’s max contract kicking in and Tyrese Maxey finally getting his well deserved contract extension, I had to clear more salary. I mean this is nuts. I had to send out guys like Jordan Clarkson, Norman Powell, and Luke Kennard last year to clear salary. And this year I still have to clear even more salary. Portland sent out a message to the league that they were willing to help any team with salary clearing. I knew nobody wanted to see Portland getting richer, so I didn’t respond to the call. Instead, I put out a message that I was offering these players for free to give others a chance. Charlotte was interested, but couldn’t quite make cap space. Indiana offered to help but at the cost of a future 1st. Then Portland came knocking offering to do it for free. Not just Barnes’ salary. Not just TJ McConnell’s salary. But all of it. I couldn’t resist.

Is Tyrese Haliburton for trade?
I had several inquiries on if any of my stars are available for trade. The only one I thought about trading was Tyrese Haliburton. But there was only one other player that I was interested in, and that was Paolo Banchero. I already took my shot, and nothing happened.
Giving up early on Daron
The draft played out perfectly for me. I got the guy I wanted. Unfortunately, he tore his right achilles after one Summer League game. The intrigue with him was that he would be on a cheap rookie contract for multiple years and would have veteran usability early since he was an older rookie. But that usability all goes away if he’s out for a whole year. He is further unusable the next year because he’ll be coming back as a 69 or 70 OVR coming off an injury. It could be 2-4 years for him to finally show something and for 2k to update his tendencies. That would be 2-4 years of a wasted roster slot for me. 2-4 years would of been okay if he had star upside, but he doesn’t have that. He projects to be a role-player. I came into this draft hoping for a Jaime Jacquez, but ultimately ended up with a EJ Liddell.
Free Agency
As it stands, I have 5 free roster slots to fill in Free Agency this year. There will be a lot of teams looking to condense. But I’m going to wait until teams start getting desperate and selling cheap. Maybe even get some players for free. But even then, I may still be better off keeping those roster spots empty to roll the dice on some veterans in free agency.
