Rob Covington: Cut, Hold, or Trade?

A lot of what happens with Robert Covington circulates around what happens to Ricky Council IV in the NBA. I’ll first go over what’s been going on in the NBA. After the NBA trade deadline, you saw a lot of 2WAY contracts getting converted into full time contracts. Guys like Keon Ellis, Onuralp Bitim, and Trent Forrest all got converted to full time contracts.

Could this happen to any of my 2WAYs? Colin Castleton probably not. He got injured. And I haven’t seen any signs of Jared Butler getting a full-time contract. But last week in a Sixer’s mailbox response, Keith Pompey did indicate that Ricky Council IV could get converted to a full-time contract.

In the NBA, the Philadelphia Sixers have 13 contracts on the books. This means they have 2 open roster spots. They have until March 14th to get above the 14-man roster minimum. There has been word that they will have a look at Kai Jones this week. But if that doesn't work out, then they will probably convert Ricky Council IV and maybe even Terquavion Smith.

The initial plan was to drop Robert Covington when Ricky Council’s contract converts. This spot was initially held by Luke Kennard, who got sold for Kelly Olynyk and a 2nd. Kelly Olynyk then got sold for Robert Covington and a 2nd.

But there’s further news. Robert Covington was cleared to begin on-court activities last Wednesday. He will be re-evaluated this Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. So Covington might actually be back this season. I could end up keeping Covington and just dropping Ricky Council IV instead. Because Covington could certainly help us in the playoffs.

There has also been talks about trading Covington to Indiana for Dario Saric and multiple 2nds. I could also try selling Covington for another 2nd now that there is word that he may come back this season. Then again, there's still chance Ricky Council IV doesn't get converted. I don't think he's shown enough to prove that he deserves a full time contract yet, but we'll see. We also still have yet to hear from Marcus Morris Sr.

Until March 14th, I'm not sure what to do yet.
