Galvanise: A new era for the Portland Trailblazers
It’s cheesy to start an article with a definition, so I won’t do that, here. This is typically reserved for a hook or a topic sentence, to either intrigue the reader or inform them of what is to come.
I will use the second sentence to explain the word ‘galvanise’ and its meaning, and why it has ended up, in permanent ink, on the whiteboard in the Portland Trailblazers’ war room.
To galvanise is to provoke, excite or shock someone/something into taking action/change.
A sudden reaction, decision, catalyst that changes everything; what once was is now gone, and what could be is now a state of flux.
Portland are synonymous with winning and winning big, going all in, trading for stars and surgically, religiously keeping an eye on the league. Over four years, they never once flinched in committing what it took to be one of the best teams in the league. For their trouble, they claimed two titles, avoided disasters and suffered some untimely twists of fate.
Shock something into taking action/change.
The team has detonated on everything that was and now are left with the fallout – a result that the Front Office are subtly excited about, if not scared, about how to navigate the next moves for the franchise.
The superstars that guarded the Moda Center like gladiators at the Coliseum no longer protect the halls. Replacing the ideal team build of 2.5 stars, undervalued vets and unmatched chemistry is the ideal of defense, opportunity and youth.
Chris Paul, the wise old head and future Hall of Famer, almost twice as old as half the players on the team, acts as a teacher and a steward of elite habits and behaviours, instilling the right knowledge and expectations on a young, impressionable roster.
Derrick White, the team’s best player, will continue to grow and push through discomfort and uncertainty to work towards being an All-Star type player. Bogdan Bogdanovic, the Euro star and great offensive player, is the only other player on the roster in his prime or near it.
The rest of the team, packed with talented young players, will all get a chance to prove themselves, and to play.
No longer are the eyes on the prize. They are on the process.
