Weird History lesson and GM points

Did someone just say impending 190GM point lux tax?

GM Rootsey is all in, trying to trade for every bit of salary he can get his hands on. Bringing in a little bit more long term money in the Beal/Anderson deal in week 9, and making the move to add in the safe hands of Jevon Carter increased the teams committed salary by nearly $5M. The team still holds a TPE of just over $4M, and the team has so many 2nd rounders it hurts. The team will prioritise adding a "win-now" player in that price range for a handful of 2nds, or over the summer relieve itself of a few 2nds to help top up the kitty once the fine gets levied. But who cares about finances lets talk deals.

Jevon Carter first.  The team had been trying to make Tre Mann perform like a Tyler Herro light in their system, but the role wasn't fitting the player in his current stage of development. This was leading to too many shots and not enough makes from Mann on a consistant basis and really sinking the second units effectiveness. A few other options were investigated while trying to either extend the Herro light approach with more mature players like Shake Milton, or take some flyers on other young guys like Christian Braun or Kennedy Chandler. In the end the team went searching for a pass first defensive guy who wouldn't demand more than 15 minutes a game. This is where the price and player match found Jevon Carter. Two games in and we couldn't be happier with how hes fit the system, shooting 50% rom the field and 60% from 3pt without committing a turnover, yes please.

The thing that worked well with Jevon has yet to settle in for Kyle Anderson, the less heralded player from the big deal. Kyle as an ex-nsl-Grizzly who left the team via trade back nearly 2 years ago to the day for Eric Paschall (later the key piece in bringing Mike Conley onboard) and a 2nd. In this deal Anderson was brought in for the cost of Bruce Brown (who was pick 11 (326 overall) for the Grizzlies in the Inaugural NSL draft), both servicable players, but the team wanted to keep adding height and length. Kyle had also been balling out in the NBA so the GM was excited to potentially add the solid vet back into the fold. So far the results haven't been outstanding, shooting poorly has been his downfall, but his PRF have been the highest of the bench unit due to his distribution skills and his perchant to bring the ball up the court as an off guard.

The final piece of the week 9 deals was Beal. Another returning Grizzly. His initial trade set the course of the franchise way back when the league was in its infancy. Back in 2018 Bradley Beal was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 26th pick of the Inaugural NSL draft. Beal was to be paired with Jaren Jackson (Grizzlies 2nd pick at 35 in the snake draft format, and last remaining original Grizz nation member), but they never ended up playing together. Back in 2019 Nels came a knocking, and offered Jaylen Brown, Tyler Herro, Derrick Favors, and a 1st which over the course of time left the team and returned in the form of MarJon Beauchamp for Beal. GM Rootsey couldn't say no to the deal and set the teams title aspiriations back a few years, while it catapulted the Spurs to one of the best teams in the league.

We now come back to the present and look at the deal that returned Beal to his rightful home. The price was high, the coveted Sacramento pick, the even more coveted Lakers '24 pick, and by the looks of things now the least coveted Phoenix 27 pick, along with Caris Levert and Mike Conley (expect to see him return at some point because I'm starting to sense a trading pattern) GM Rootsey had been wanting to ride the wave that is holding a Kings pick for the whole season, but plucky Klemm is doing all he can to bring his rag tag roster together. So the team was judging it a late lottery pick. The Lakers pick today looks tasty until you see the success of the Clippers this season and you look at Cade, Lakers 1st and Golden State 1st this season amongst the 5 first rounders they have next season. Finally you have the Phoenix pick that this year is lottery bound, they've got a potentially well priced core of players that they can add to with their first this year. So we add a 3 times all star having his most efficient shooting season in half a decade along with a couple of seconds, sure one of those seconds is a Trailblazers 59-60 pick in 2026, but the other one is almost a guaranteed 31st pick of the draft this offseason. This pick is GM Rootsey's favorite pick of the draft every year, just a simple slider pick to see what has drifted out of the first round, or a pick of the best placed players in the second round (so much a favourite the team selected pick 30/31 with their 14th selection (395 overall) in the NSL draft). Magic.

The team is all in and looking to add another piece, but probably only pieces they've had on their squad in the past it seems. They need to generate so much content or may be 2nd sellers come draft time, so expect to hear a lot more about the Grizz in coming weeks.
