News - San Antonio Spurs - Nels
Free Agent Class of 2022
Another Free Agency has come and gone and what a day it was. Drama and shocks all around and a nervous wait on at least one player to commit to San Antonio for the coming season.
The Spurs entered the Free Agency with only 8 rostered players, Dedmon included in that number, needing to bring in multiple players to fill various roles. Priority number 1 was to bolster the C position, which was headlined with the need to retain Dewayne Dedmon and find a starting calibre big. Priority 2 was to find PG eligible players and one that could potentially start at the beginning of the season. Priority 3 was to find the next crop of players who can hopefully add to Spurs culture and fulfil considerable roles in the future.
Target number 1 on the board was JaVale McGee though the Spurs front office would have to wait until later in the day to sign the glitch big man. Target 2 was resigning Dewayne Dedmon who would become the bench centre in the coming season. The final big target was 24 year old Dennis Smith Jr who appears ready to fulfil his potential in Charlotte this coming season depending on the size of his role once LaMelo returns (if indeed he does).
The first target to appear on the board was Dennis Smith Jr, this caught Spurs management off guard as they were expecting him to appear later with the minimums. After a moment's doubt, 99 Gms were loaded up and dropped on the 76 overall breakout hopeful. A large price to pay for a guy who is very unproven but at the minimum, Smith Jr appeared to be the best Point Guard available. Smith Jr will likely start opening night next to Lebron at SG, his role will be to defend hard and play a distributors role as Lebron runs the offence.
Quickly after Smith hit the block, 3 trades were reached to send two 2nd round picks to Philly and another to Cleveland in order to stock up the war chest. Dedmon appeared in the next flurry of free agents meaning quick decisions had to be made. To patch the potential of him being poached, Spurs management decided a 20gm bid would make a poach really challenging. An opponent would need at least 70 gms plus luck to steal from there. Dedmon was unrivalled and returned home to open arms. It'll be unlikely he starts next season as our next signing will take that role, but he will see a sizable role in the second unit as his size and blocking prowess makes him an excellent 2k commodity.
The Spurs bid here and there on lesser names and younger guys until their marquee man hit the market late in the day. JaVale McGee had to be signed in order to fulfill the priorities outlined earlier in the article. 99 gms were once again loaded up and input into the system, a nervous wait until, "JaVale McGee chooses San Antonio!" Sighs of relief were heard in the front office as the marquee man put pen to paper late in the day. Spurs management were stoked with the signing as McGee will be around for 3 years holding down the fort. This will make next season's Free Agency easier as there will be one less position to worry about. McGee will start on opening night and is expected to be a disruptor alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo throughout the upcoming season.
Other notable signings:
Lamar Stevens (75 overall)- 0 gms
Matthew Dellavedova- 0 gms
Jordan Hall (rookie)- 0 gms
Tyrese Martin (rookie)- 0 gms
Spurs management were happy with the haul as all needs were fulfilled. 2 points guards, 2 centres and a bunch of guys under the age of 25, including 2 rookies. With trade whispers always around, it'll be interesting to see what the next move is for the Spurs front office.
