News - Memphis Grizzlies - Rootsey
Nearly 30 Years in the making
The year, 1993.
The place, Toormina High School basketball courts. Not the main court mind you, just a ring to the side where the year 7s can shoot and not interrupt the main game.
The characters, a skinny springy kid, Digeze, known by other names way back when and a large lump of a lad with too much confidence in his basketball ability, Rootsey. Known back then as Rootsey.
The challenge. 1 on 1 to 21.
Everyone knew Digeze was the best hooper in our squad, but while he was humble he was quietly confident. Rootsey who also knew Digeze was the better shooter/jumper/dribbler of the team, stepped up to challenge during second break, but was less humble and less quiet about his confidence. The rest of the group cheered on the battle as Digeze took an early lead into the game hitting some easy layups and short jumpers. Rootsey was able to use his size in the post to steal a couple of buckets back, but the inevitable happened and Digeze took the win and the crowd and Digeze were able to put Rootsey back in his place.

Since then many games have passed between the two. From one on ones to high school social comps, to shooting hoops at the primary school across the road from the sharehouse they stayed in, to basketball carnivals which become more of a reason to drink and see each other than to actually shoot hoops, and finally through to fantasy basketball because living 3000kms away from each other makes it challenging to organise a game of pick up.
But that's all in the past now. The here and now is about revenge.
While Digeze was able to snag the victory so many moons ago, Rootsey has vowed revenge as he takes his Memphis Grizzles up against the Denver Nuggets. Who will win this battle, only time will tell. Rootsey is very confident that his team can come out on top, against the Nuggets, depth and strength is in their favour.
Will we see Digeze post a reply? Probably not, he's humble and quietly confident.
