Wild Finish in the Wild West

A wild finish to regular season took place in the Western Conference, with the final game deciding who was the first seed and who was the second seed. Portland had played their final game days earlier, so their fate rested in the hands of two other Western Conference powerhouse teams.

The Minnesota Timberwolves took on the San Antonio Spurs who were without LeBron, playing a close game that lived up to the hype. The Spurs, on the back of a dominant Jimmy Butler display, won the game and coincidingly the Western Conference. Their strong showing sent them to the top of the West and pushed Portland to the other side of the bracket and the 2 seed, aligning them with teams like Minnesota, Houston and the winner of the 7 vs 8 Play In game the Denver Nuggets or the New Orleans Pelicans.

For now, Portland is unaware of their first round opponent as the cards have yet to be dealt.

It has been a successful campaign for Portland, even if the fanfare and typical displays of power were not as prevalent as past seasons. Considering the team was at 4 and 4, going into Week 3 of the season open to a retool/gap year, the team soon found their footing and climbed quickly. Portland ended up going 64 and 10 from that mark, pushing their assets and money towards another All In season, which ultimately lead to the acquisition of Kevin Durant.

The Wild West has never been a more deadly place. The Champion Spurs are better than last season and better placed to win it all. The Wolves, 50+ games better this season and the Grizzlies, who have continued their ascent, all won 65+ games. Unprecendented top end talent in the West. On top of that, seeds 5 through 8 will likely contain Giannis, Nikola Jokic, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Ja Morant and Donovan Mitchell.

Buckle up, Blazers fans.
