NSL Insider - Team by Team: Boston Celticsby leeroy, updated on Wednesday, November 12 2025, 07:45 pm EST Boston Celtics Team Review 2024-25 Finish: 39-43 (10th in East)
Season Highlight: Boston is the perennial break out potential team, despite the season record, this was the season that we see that potential starting to shine, Sengun has become a legitimate star to go along site Jayson Tatum, rookie pick Jared McCain shows massive promise for a later pick, Bub Carrington and Jaylen Wells are 2 more young guys that show a lot of upside..
Season Lowlight: Not making the playoffs is a disappointment for a team this talented, Jayson Tatum had a massive season, but it was only good enough for 10th in the improved East, ending in a play-in game elimination to the Miami Heat. Then the real gut punch was losing Tatum to an Achilles injury that will likely see him out for most of the next season.
Best Trade: Celtics send: Dillon Brooks, 2nd-Rounder (Det) Olivier-Maxence Prosper Celtics receive: Vasilije Micic, Marvin Bagley III , Bub Carrington While I don’t love this one for the Celtics, there weren’t heaps of trades throughout the season for them. Bub Carrington shows promise for a guy that really didn’t work with their young core in Brooks. Bagley and Micic aren’t on the roster anymore.
Worst Trade: Celtics send: Jusuf Nurkic, Kelly Oubre Celtics receive: Brook Lopez, Jett Howard Celtics sending out 2 vets that really are solid contributors in 2k for Lopez and a young guy I just don’t see it with in Howard. I hope he can find his way and become a solid peice for the Celtics.
Other Notable Trades: Celtics send: Deni Avdija, 2nd-Rounder (Por) and 1st-Rounder (Bos) Celtics receive: Jaylen Wells Jusuf Nurkic
The only other trade of real note, Getting Wells is really nice, giving up a 1st and Avdija stings a bit especially with the improvement he has shown. Nurk was a nice addition for a bench piece but was swiftly sent on his way.
Free Agency: The Celtics will have some work to do to sore out the roster crunch, I can’t seem then being a big player in FA but will likely be in trades. They have 15 players already contracted and still are to bring back Jonathan Kuminga as a RFA. So unless there is something big brewing in the background to free some spots should be an easy FA day for Toby.
Star:
2024/2025 was an epic season for Tatum as he stepped to true superstardom. 37 points per game, 7 rebounds per game 3 assists per game, he also managed 74 games played for the season. With him on the court the Celtics were a threat no matter the opponent.
Flop: Jayson Tatums Achilles Injury A bit of a cop out but this one stings so much. The Celtics will likely be without Tatum for most of the upcoming season, while they have some guys that will step up, Sengun especially, it is a massive hold for the team to cover. There are not many teams that can cover the loss of a mid 90’s rated superstar and the Celtics are no different although with their youth stocks are probably one of the better placed teams to do so.
Draft Grades: Pick 26 – Walter Clayton Jr Overall Grade: B The Celtics only had a late pick which is unusual ground for them. Clayton Jr is somewhat redundant for a team sporting Scoot Henderson, Devin Carter and Bub Carrington already. Having said that Clayton Jr has some tools that could see him become a rotation piece going forward.
The Future: Another season of development for the Celtics young guys while they wait for Tatum to return. They hold their own 2026 pick so if things turn south it won’t be all lost. We still expect a competitiveness from the Celtics especially early in the season and if Sengun, Kuminga, George and others can improve they might be in the running for the play in spots late, if Tatum gets back then anything could happen, a Spurs like run maybe?
