Quiet Deadline, Loud Expectations
Two weeks ago, the Bulls executed a bold trade: Larry Nance Jr., Joe Ingles, a 2025 first-round pick, and a 2027 second-rounder (via the Lakers) were sent to Golden State in exchange for Josh Green and 10 GM points. With Jalen Suggs now ruled out for the season, the move was seen as essential to shore up Chicago’s defense.

We sat down with Bulls GM Jonathan to discuss how this trade fits into the team’s defensive blueprint, the role of star LaMelo Ball, and what the current expectations are for the rest of the season.
“When Jalen’s season was effectively over, we had to confront a serious defensive gap,” Jonathan explained. “Our defensive core, anchored by Pascal Siakam, Nic Claxton, Haywood Highsmith, and Goga Bitadze—remained solid, but we needed an additional wing who could lock down opposing players.”
Josh Green, known for his versatility and relentless energy on defense, was the ideal candidate. “He brings an intensity that immediately uplifts our perimeter defense,” Jonathan continued. “This trade wasn’t just about replacing a player, it was about reinforcing our identity this year and for future seasons.”
With LaMelo Ball established as the team’s star, Jonathan highlighted how the new defensive piece fits perfectly alongside him. “LaMelo is a dynamic playmaker, and his offensive brilliance creates opportunities, but it’s his chemistry with a strong defensive wing that really maximizes our potential,” Jonathan noted. “Pairing him with a player like Green allows us to play a fast paced, two-way game that leverages both our offensive creativity and defensive prowess.”
The trade did come at a cost. Parting with Larry, Joe, and future draft capital was not a decision taken lightly. “Those draft picks are expected to be later in their respective rounds, and while we miss the flexibility they might have offered, we’re prioritizing immediate impact,” Jonathan said. “In the short term, Josh provides exactly what we need now, and the 10 GM points give us room to maneuver in future transactions.”
While the Bulls won’t have any picks in the upcoming draft, the organization isn’t without intriguing assets for the future. “We’re in possession of the draft rights to two very promising players: James Nnaji, an absolute specimen who might be coming over from Europe next season, and Nikola Djurisic, who will add even more size and versatility at the wing,” Jonathan revealed. “These prospects are part of our long term vision"
Unlike some teams that made a flurry of moves at the trade deadline, the Bulls remained notably silent at the trade deadline. “We had our discussions, but nothing beyond this move made sense for us,” Jonathan admitted. “With Suggs out for the season, we needed to stick with our plan. There was no need to force additional trades that might disrupt our chemistry.”
With a strengthened defensive unit and a star like LaMelo Ball leading the charge, the Bulls are positioning themselves for success despite the setback of losing Suggs for the season. “We’re confident in our direction,” Jonathan concluded. “Our moves are deliberate, balancing present needs with future potential. We believe that both our on court chemistry and our roster of young talents will drive us forward.”
The Bulls’ strategy is clear: while the immediate loss is significant, the trade for Josh Green and the promising prospects on the horizon offer a pathway to sustained competitiveness in a challenging season.
