Boston Free Agency

The Boston Celtics haven’t to this date really been a team that has put a lot of emphasis in free agency, due to being jam packed with rookies each year.

This year wasn’t going to be much different until the day before free agency, where GM Toby, made the heart wrenching call to withdraw the qualifying offer and release James Wiseman. It took much deliberating after years of loyalty, but that 30mil cap hold really made things difficult.

His achilles tear meant he would miss the entire year and with a team option the following, he may be out of contract anyway.

Selling a couple of seconds got the teams GM points up to over 100 and they now had to decide the target.

Potential ones were Isaac Okorro, Chris Paul, Buddy Hield, Deanthony Melton and Kelly Oubre.

Unfortunately on the day Boston dropped their 99 GM points on Buddy and we all know how that played out. It sounds almost embarrassing, but the GM started to sweat and heart beat rose in the what felt like hours between submitting the bid and admin reading out he result. Safe to say there were no smiles and kind words once the result was revealed.

None the less, they had to move forwards. A few one point bids were put on some other guys like Jalen Smith and Derrick Jones JR.

The Kelly Oubre came up right near the end of the day and GM went all in. A whopping seven point bid was submitted and fortunately it was enough to secure Oubre. I don’t actually think anyone else bid…

Oubre will fit in quite nicely. He is versatile, being able to play the SG, SF and PF positions, but I don’t see him getting any minutes at PF.

He will sure up the sg and sf rotations and can see him being a solid  part of the rotations going forward. He is a journeyman, but a nice talent to add the roster.

All the best to Kelly going forward, although I believe he has already been mentioned on the trade block.
