The Two Towers

Draft night came and went, and the Hawks FO is ecstatic at how it turned out. After being short on bigs last season, relying on two-way guys to fill the gap at multiple points, they hopefully fixed that problem for the foreseeable future. Originally coming into this draft with 5 first round picks, they consolidated 2 of them into the #1 overall pick, Alex Sarr. Then, after Donovan Clingan was still on the board at 5, Atlanta pulled the trigger on another move up, trading their other 3 1sts to move up and take him. The result is a powerful 4/5 punch that can anchor the frontcourt and provide some much needed size and defense.
Sarr is a much more versatile big, with the potential to even transition to a wing player down the road; such a transition would require that he starts to shoot more accurately from 3, but even if he doesn't he's still a very multifaceted defender, able to guard multiple positions. What he lacks in pure paint protection, however, is more than made up from Clingan, who's even taller and much less shy around the rim on both offense and defense. In the worst case scenario, both players never develop a shot and will need to be spilt up on separate units to avoid clogging the paint, but the hope is that at least one of them can so they can play together.
As for next season, while they do not expect to be as bad, there is still no expectation of making the playoffs, as they will be playing mostly rookies and sophomores. That said, here is what their expected rotation could look like:
PG1: Immanuel Quickley
SG1: Coby White
SF1: Desmond Bane
PF1: Tobias Harris
C1: Alex Sarr
PG2: Payton Pritchard
SG2: Brandin Podziemski
SF2: Jaime Jaquez Jr
PF2: Isaiah Stewart
C2: Donovan Clingan
Alternates:
Taylor Hendricks
Gradey Dick
Jarace Walker
Terance Mann
Trey Lyles
As of now, Harris is slated to return, but given potential financial constraints, he may end up being a cap casualty. Eventually we would like to see Sarr and Clingan progress to where Sarr can take that starting PF spot anyway, and have Clingan replace Sarr as the starting C, but slow and steady wins the race. This season will be all about keeping a close eye on the development of all of these players.
