Playoffs
Weird to think we are almost at the playoffs already, this season has seemed to fly by, with a lot of that do to with Covid. Covid has taken quite a toll on both the NBA and the NSL with players sitting for their isolation periods the new NSL rule with 4 NBA games missed = 1 NSL week missed became very easy to miss players for weeks at random points. I think the rule is going to be a really good one going forward, though this season it has been more of a hinderance. Cleveland has had it's own run of Covid related "injuries" leading to the decimation of our playing list on more than one occasion. For 5 weeks of the season we have had key players miss plus another 2 weeks where we fell under the minimum players required and needed top ups from the league, it's been a season long battle to make playoffs that had nothing to do with the quality of the roster and everything to do with struggling to field a team. Week 12 we finally got the roster completely healthy and had C.J. McCollum return to the lineup and everything started to look right, until it didn't. It was clear right away that CJ did not mesh with this rosters construction, our identity has been defense since the start of my tenure with the Cavaliers and CJ had 0 defensive ability. We went 2-6 with CJ and I immediately took to the phones having conversations with many teams around the league before finding a deal with the Sixers to acquire a defensive stud in Matisse Thybulle a player we had been targeting since mid 2021 and the other pieces that came with him.
Since the inception of Thybulle and Horford our team has changed drastically, 2 defensive leaders added to a cohort of elite defenders was what we needed. Since the trade we have gone 12-4 with wins over some really talented sides and find ourselves 5th in the East with 3 weeks to play. Week 17 was an incredible run of games having a 4-0 week and having Wiggins hit 2 game winners over what we deemed to be better teams than us and having Jarrett Allen finally showing some of that elite big man dominance finishing the week with averages of 21ppg, 16rpg, 1spg and 2.3bpg on 72% from the field including a career high 30 points, 16 rebound game in a crucial win over the wounded but still dangerous Toronto. However injuries have ravaged us again, in week 18 Jarrett Allen (Fractured finger) is set to miss the season with no timetable to return and Andrew Wiggins will miss week 18 in a crucial week where only 1 game seperates playoff and play in teams. We hope to just salvage some wins and hope to at least avoid a 9th place finish.
