ROOKIE OF THE WEEK WATCH - Week 1

PLAYERTEAMWHYSTATS

Carter Bryant

PER 12.73

Eastern
1-3
Bryant only saw 12 minutes of action a night for the Nets in week 1, but showed some desire to put up shots which might not be where he is ready for just yet. 6 points a game, but on 27% shooting, he was a solid 38% from deep though. He didn;t add much else, and maybe won't be in the rotation once the team is healthy.

Ace Bailey

PER 10.93

Eastern
2-3
Ace was a Summer League stud and was really making some people ponder why they were so scared to draft him because of it. He cooled off a little in his first week, thrust into a starting role in 32 minutes, he put up a pedestrian 9 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists with a block per game on a paltry 27% from the field and 24% from deep. The only way from there is up, right? Probably doesn't get the nod this week.

Yanic Konan Niederhauser

PER 15.56

Eastern
4-0
The rich get richer? Niederhauser was a "faller" in the NSL draft but is an athletic young big man whom may never reach anywhere in the NBA, but as long as he has a contract he has bench big potential because of his physical traits. This was on show in week 1 as he came off the bench for the star studded Bucks and averaged 7 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and a block as the perfect bench big man. 70% from the field, too!

Tre Johnson

PER 15.72

Eastern
4-0
Week 1 and the Knicks were the talk of the town, but maybe missed in all of that was the stand out performance from their rookie guard whom came off the bench and poured in 11 points per game in 20 minutes per game with 1 rebounds and 2 assists per game. It was a little volume-esque with 36% from the field and 30% from deep, but a rookie who is willing to attack with reckless abandon and put up double figures off the bench is a good thing to have.

Sion James

PER 13.16

Eastern
4-0
Speaking of Bucks bench rookies, Sion James was also thrust into a role this week with his ready made defensive traits and while the numbers aren't elite, you never sneeze at a rookie guard averaging 5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal in only 16 minutes off the bench. That's solid production that a team with a championship aspiration must get from their role players when needed to step up.

Khaman Maluach

PER 13.96

Western
0-4
Maluach got the start in Phoenix given he's big, athletic, defensive minded and the man of the future and he did solidly with 11 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 1.5 blocks per game. 2k is the big mans game and starting an athletic rookie big at the C spot could have yielded much worse results than this, even if he won't compete for the weekly award this week.

VJ Edgecombe

PER 19.18

Western
1-3
Edgecombe started week 1, likely due to injury status in LA also but he didn't disappoint going for 18 points, 3 reounds, 6.5 assists, a steal and a block per game and shit it really nice and efficiently also. If your rookie is going to do this in a darkhorse for the title team, then you're going to have a good year!

Asa Newell

PER 25.81

Western
1-3
Newell came off the bench for the Warriors and in 12 minutes he exploded on the offensive end, averaging nearly a point per minute with 11 a game and 3 rebounds. Surely this pace can't be kept up for the young big man, but as long as he's scoring, the Warriors are loving having a fresh athletic young big on the bench.

Cooper Flagg

PER 23.71

Western
2-2
In week 1, Flagg showed every bit of why he was the coveted #1 pick this year and it's going to be mighty hard to beat him out for the end of year award even just because he has a role that should be stable and every opportunity to succeed. That said, he poured in veteran numbers at 29.5 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 1.8 steals and 1 block per game even if he was a little inefficient at 36% from the field and 27% from deep. Someone has got to put it in the hoop in Portland while they are decimated by injury and Cooper looks like that guy.

29.5 PTS

1.3 BLK

Egor Demin

PER 20.08

Western
3-1
Demin got the starting nod for the surprising Dallas Mavericks in week 1 and he put up a really solid 16 points, 3 rebounds, 7 assists and a steal on 42% from the field. He didn't shoot well from deep, at 27%, but with also only 1.5 turnovers, the tall rookie guard looks like he might just be a stud for the future given his size and playmaking ability.
