MOST IMPROVED WATCH - Week 3

PLAYERTEAMWHYSTATS

Giannis Antetokounmpo

PER 41.50

Last Season
PER 30.35

Western
13-7
This selection is the epitome of an engine change effect. 2k this year has gone all out of stars and Giannis is being asked to do more than ever for the Spurs, to the point of him being a bit of a black hole. Does it matter when your black hole is shooting 63% and scoring 50 a game though? Rebounds, assists and steals all up too, and that scoring has leapt from 32 a game.

KD, really? Last year for LA he played 78 games and averaged 27 points a game with Drummond, Steph and Curry in tow. This year he's managed to suit up for 2 weeks and is averaging 35 a game on worse shooting, with less around him. Naturally, more shots. Not sure he should be here.

Is Tatum a MIP? He could have been the other year when Toby finally unleashed him, but this year going from 28 a game to 36 a game on worse splits doesn't really seem like the right person for the award.

Anthony Edwards

The leap everyone was expecting after a long NBA playoff run for the Wolves, Anthony Edwards ratings and tendencies jumped off the page and it's reflecting here. He averaged a great 25 points last year, but that has gone to 40 a game through 15 games this year and there should be no stopping this from continuing as the Thunder rely heavily on their main man.

Ja Morant

Eastern
13-7
Oh boy here we go again with this "Most Improved" award and the stars all being chosen. Ja Morant is the first of them. Week 1 for Ja he averaged 54 points a game, which obviously blows his 32 points a game average (in only 12 games) last year out of the water, but is it an improvement or an engine thing? After two games in week 2 (week 4 for the rest of us) for Ja, he's down to 41 per game, which is less league leading for the MIP.

Derrick White

PER 30.96

Last Season
PER 19.89

9-11
Derrick White exploded last year once he landed in Portland where the team was in such flux and without a true scorer, he took on the role and averaged 21 a game despite being targeted by the defenses. He's now in Miami, and same deal. Pete is known for not thinking about offence and the team is offence phobic outside of Derrick and CJ, and it's paying dividends for White averaging 31 points and 4 assists which is up from 21 and 4 assists with Portland. He's a little less efficient and doing a little less otherwiuse though.

Tyler Herro

PER 30.88

PER 20.28

Western
8-14
Herro missed alot of time last year for Memphis and he was comparatively forgotten alot of the time because of it. He was sent out in one of the first cost cutting moves for the Grizz this offseason. He was always set to start a climb though, as one of those combo guards and scoring types, and he's wound up in Sacramento, for Andrew Wiggins of all people. 28 points is a far cry from the 18 he was scoring last year and the Kings offence will continue to get the most out of him, as they usually do with these guys, before he probably goes next level again next year.

Jalen Williams

Western
8-13
Ah, a real improved player! Jalen Williams took the NBA by storm last year propelling the Thunder to the top of the West, but here he was still only a borderline starter because of delayed 2k growth. This year however, he's now a star averaging 27 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists through 15 games on 53/42/82 splits, which is well above his 13/3/3 averages of a year ago. Genuine MIP candidate!

Desmond Bane

Bane had an interrupted campaign last year playing only 43 games but the potential was there. This year he's now averaging 25 a night and not much else which is up from 18 last year and maybe his scoring is going to translate afterall? He's a bit of a TRex and needs to develop a more rounded game even on offence, but 25 is a nice number to build off for a rebuilding Hawks.

Josh Giddey

Giddey made some strides last year, particularly after heading to Toronto, and finished the year strong off the bench for a playoff Raptors, but he was part of the deal which saw Kawhi head to Toronto and now he's coming off the bench in New York. He's only playing 25 minutes a night off the bench, but his scoring is now at 20 points a game (up from 15 as a Raptor in 5 extra minutes) and he's really taking on that lead role whenever on the court.
