ROOKIE OF THE WEEK WATCH - Week 1

PLAYERTEAMWHYSTATS

Donovan Clingan

PER 20.98

Eastern
1-3
Clingan is going to have to get used to these kind of minutes as long as he shares a team with Sarr as they play that same position and Sarr has the bigger upside. That said, Clingan is going to be a good player in his own right and if you can have a solid big man who can put up 9 points, 7 rebounds and a block and steal a game off the bench for you, you're going to have a good time!

Alex Sarr

PER 19.26

Eastern
1-3
Welcome to the show big fella! Sarr started his 1st week of his career and while he showed he is going to be a work in progress in some aspects, he immediately showed his immense defensive potential swatting away 2.8 blocks and pestering away 2.3 steals per game to go with 11 points and 9 rebounds. That's a great start from the #1 overall pick and if he keeps that up, he might be hard to pip for ROTW.

Pelle Larsson

PER 23.69

Eastern
1-3
Larsson, another guy drafted by the 76ers but had to be shipped out due to overcrowding, got a nod as a rotation piece in week 1 and did not disappoint. 9 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists in 13 minutes and shot it a fantastic 59/71/82 splits. If he ever gets a look as a starter, he might well win this award this year!

Jonathan Mogbo

PER 10.82

Eastern
2-2
Like Hukporti, Mogbo got thrust into a role that would not have been given to him out of the gate had it not been for injury but he performed gallantly as a starter. 6 points, 8 rebounds and a steal is a decent return in your debuting week when you're a 2nd round pick and no one had heard of you. He's going to earn time eventually, but for now he'll stick to this bit minute role while the team is banged up.

Ariel Hukporti

PER 20.00

Eastern
2-2
Injury forced the 76ers to play good bench minutes to their rookie big man who just recently converted from a 2way deal in the NBA, and he showed he can already mix it as that bench big role. 6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2 blocks in 18 minutes off the bench is a really nice return from any bench big man, let alone a debutant super late 2nd rounder, and they may have stumbled upon another big man that can produce for them. He won't beat Sarr this week, but he looked good.

Dalton Knecht

PER 10.02

Western
0-4
Knecht was the man Dallas wanted in the end after shuffling picks all round the place during the process and he drafted him much higher than the NBA and maybe forgoing guys that better fit his team. He started week 1, but struggled mightily only putting up 6 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists on 37/27/50 splits and showing he's got to get some seasoning before being used like this.

Stephon Castle

PER 11.28

Western
1-3
Rookie PGs, even when they are top talent and fitting into a star team, still not great. Castle started this week and 10 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists show he's raw. he shot well from deep at least but the kid isn't there yet. The Grizz will be happier once others return to the squad and alleviate the need to use the rookie this early in his career.

Ulrich Chomche

PER 16.31

Western
2-3
Chomche was lauded by a couple of people around draft time despite being the raw chicken guy in the draft this year. Despite this, he moved through at least 3 teams over the offseason before landing in Portland and playing a role off the bench in week 1 as a 2way call up. 7 points, 5 rebounds and nearly 2 assists says maybe he's not as raw in 2k as he is in the NBA? That's probably ahead of Edey.

Zach Edey

PER 21.09

Western
1-3
Edey has the perfect make up of a 2k big man with his size, even if he struggles to move. Just look at Boban over the years. This week he played reserve big man and put up 6 points, 4 rebounds and nearly 2 blocks per game which showed his upside. He might struggle to differentiate from the other nominations this week, but he might get his chance if he ever starts this year.

Bub Carrington

PER 14.39

Western
3-1
Rookie point guards are a tricky thing, and Laddas has been searching all offseason for someone to be a vet PG off the bench, even as a low as low end guy, but it didn't happen and now Bub got 21 minutes off the bench in week 1 as a reserve. 9 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists on paper doesn't look like bad return from the rook, but his 2 turnovers and 35/9/88 splits suggest Laddas was right to be seeking a vet PG for playing time.
