Average? Mediocre? Whatever term you wanna use, the Hawks are it. Not only are they average though, but they're inconsistent as well, especially recently.
Weeks 13-14: 2-6
Weeks 15-16: 7-2
Week 17 so far: 0-2
Some points to highlight:
-Although they have one of the best rebounders in the game in donovan clingan, they are actually somewhat undersized on the whole. Quickley and camara are undersized, divincenzo isn't a rebounder at all, and scottie is a plus but isn't enough. Then you have the backup center, Alex Sarr, who while he is hopefully a budding star, rebounding is not his strong suit, so the backup unit doesn't really clean the glass much either.
-Shooting is somewhat top-heavy at the moment, as Immanuel Quickley has gone to the next level since the trades, and divincenzo has mostly normalized as a good shooter, but outside of that the threes have been hard to come by (which was expected).
-Pace has been an issue all season, and it likely will be as long as Clingan is the center. He's improved his conditioning a lot, but the reality is a 7'2" giant can only move so fast, and with the lack of perimeter shooting, precious time has to be spent waiting for him to get up the court, especially in transition off a turnover or rebound. Quickley being a small guard means he cannot push the transition game effectively compared to a bigger guard, and it's a factor in the offense going cold at times. It also makes transition defense harder, when Clingan is often lagging behind the play going for a rebound.
All of this adds up to a team that's 33-33, perfectly balanced as Thanos would say, and fighting for a playoff spot, a spot that looks increasingly unlikely to reach 7/8. But still, that was entirely the expectation going into the season, and it remained as such even after the blockbuster trade they made earlier in the year.
