Regular season wrap up
Just like that it's seasons end, heading into this season we held no real expectations. We only had 2 goals, 1 was to get our 1st round pick which was owned by conference rival Orlando Magic out of lottery range and the other was to make the play in. These goals don't seem like we're striving for much but with the teams core roster age being only 23 years old it was a realistic goal before dreaming of a chip. Through securing 6th place, tied with Toronto Raptors as of now the standings have us at 7th however the Cavs win the tie breaker having defeated Toronto 2-1 on the season owning our head to head series. We have not only pushed our pick out of the lottery we exceeded our other goal of making the play in tournament by heading straight to a playoff series against the Washington Wizards. At the present time team selection is up in the air due to losing key big man Jarrett Allen in week 17 and not knowing if he will return and the situation with Matisse Thybulle not being vaccinated causing him to miss games in Toronto meaning he will only be available for 4 games of the 7 game series. This will be our 2nd appearance in the playoffs after finishing 5th in the inaugural NSL season and going down 4-2 to the Miami Heat in the 1st round, we hope to go further this season and feel healthy we can take it right up to the Wizards and could be the 1st upset of the playoffs.
Some standouts from our guys this season:
Jarrett Allen was named an All Star in both the NSL and the NBA for the first time. We traded for Jarrett 2 years ago having full belief he could be a great big man in the league and its great to see him starting to reach that potential.
Davion Mitchell looks worth every penny taking him 8th in the draft. Having watched Davion through most of his senior year at Baylor I was set on bringing him to the Land and his starting numbers of 18 points, 7 assists have proven to us, at least that we made the right choice. Through the NBA Kings not making the play in and them shutting down Fox for the season he has gone to another level averaging 18.3ppg and 8.7apg with some crazy good lockdown defense and has really stamped his authority and proved the doubters wrong.
Obi Toppin since the Knicks have shut down Randle for the year has been coming up huge and looks to be taking a big step in his game. Toppin in the last 7 games Thibs has let him start has averaged 19.5ppg, 6.5rpg and 3apg on 58% from the field and 47% from 3. Obi has made huge strides in limited time, Thibs has Obi playing such little minutes in the rotation that Davion has played more career minutes to this point in his career which is ridiculous.
We love the look of this team and cant wait to watch this group grow.
