MVP WATCH - Week 15

PLAYERTEAMWHYSTATS

Jayson Tatum

PER 36.91

MVP 41.91

Eastern
33-33
Tatum missed again last week and the Celts kept losing, falling to 11 straight losses before they finally snapped it. He's averaging 36 a night with 6 rebounds and 3 assists and often fronts up on a tough assignment on D, too. The Celts need their main man, clearly and that makes him at least a show for the MVP award.

Giannis Antetokounmpo

PER 44.97

MVP 50.57

Western
38-30
Giannis is back and his Spurs resurgence that he has bolstered is showing why the man should be the MVP this year, even if SA finish lower on the standings. Without him, they don't make playoffs. That much is clear and simple and that should come into consideration when you look at a guy averaging 43 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists, 1.4 steals and 2.2 blocks and literally propelling his team to a Playoff birth.

Luka Doncic

PER 34.34

MVP 40.04

Western
39-29
Luka is another who will probabaly fail the games needed to win the award but the Pels are clearly better with their #1 star and franchise face playing. 33 points a game last week and they got important wins, too. He does a bit of everything for them as the big PG and if he can be healthier next year, and stay healthy down the stretch this year, the Pels will be trouble.

Ja Morant

PER 36.56

MVP 42.46

Eastern
40-28
Ja didn't play last week and the Hornets felt it. They are a strong team regardless, but when you shelve 35 points a night, you're going to feel it. I don't think he's quite at the level of the guys above him on this list, but he's definitely the entire key to Charlotte being a strong playoff finisher and potential late playoff appearance, and a genuine shot at coming out of the East and trying for that title.

Kevin Durant

PER 39.41

MVP 45.31

Eastern

Not that I don't love or think Brunson is a stud player, but the move of Curry to Brunson signaled the Raptors going all out KD offence and he responded exactly in kind. 50 points per game last week with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 1.5 steals and 2.3 blocks and that is basically up on all season numbers, but especially the points. Look for that to continue down the stretch, especially while Brunson is out, but even when he's back.

Jimmy Butler

PER 36.79

MVP 42.99

Western
42-26
Jimmy has been a cracker this year despite his NBA issues and the Wolves have been riding him to their success. He's going to struggle to make the games limit though to win this award, even if he could beat out the others above him. If my math is mathing right...

James Harden

PER 35.26

MVP 41.36

Western
41-26
The Jazz have had the horrible news that Embiid is done for the year so it all now turns to Harden to be the main man and hope that Kristaps can aid him enough as a side piece. Well, last week Harden poured in 49 points per game with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Reckon that's enough? His scoring average is flying up now and he's going to put himself into this conversation if the Jazz finish this season strong.

Lebron James

PER 38.48

MVP 44.88

Eastern
42-24
Lebron has been a monster this season and is firming as one of the favourites for the MVP award this season now for the Wizards. His case is only buoyed by his absence this last week and this week with the Wizards struggling so much with him on the shelf. How can you not miss a guy averaging 40 a night, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, a steal and nearly 2 blocks. He needs to be healthy down the stretch.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

PER 39.32

MVP 46.42

Eastern
49-20
The Bucks decided to hand the reins entirely to Shai when they moved on PG13 and in a way, it was lucky they did as now PG is out then they would have been doing that anyway. He's been the resounding leader for the team and 43 a night last week lifting his season numbers above 36 a night. He's also averaging over 2 steals a game and a block to boot, and he has to be in the conversation if not a leader of the bunch.

0.9 BLK

DeAaron Fox

PER 33.30

MVP 40.80

Eastern
51-17
Did Fox just fall 3 games short of the 65 for an award or was it 60 to win? Either way, he's done now for the year and while it was another elite year for the stud guard in a new jersey, helping lead the Cavs to the top east seed currently, it was down a little on his MVP level numbers from last year averaging 31 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists with a steal.

30.9 PTS
