ROOKIE OF THE WEEK WATCH - Week 19

PLAYERTEAMWHYSTATS

Donovan Clingan

PER 22.23

Eastern
1-3
Clingan is a rebounding and defending beast who is going to bring problems to east for next decade. He rebounds both ends at a near elite level, defends the rim quite well and rarely fouls. It’s what you want for any above average starting centre let alone on that is a rookie. While his shooting efficiency dropped a bit this week and is something that will need to be worked on in the offseason he attacked the rim as hard as he ever has which has such a giant effect on how the Hawks perform game to game. Is Don, Is good.

Alex Sarr

PER 18.26

Eastern
1-3
Another highly drafted rookie, another Atlanta Hawks player. Sarr is a bit of a project but still good enough now to make a decent impact for the Hawks. They have tested him off the bench, a starter with big minutes and a starter with limited minutes and that’s the role he played the past week. Even though he played 5 minutes less than his season average he produced better averages in 3 of 7 counting stats categories and raised his effect in the process shooting 6% better from the field than the rest of the seasons but more importantly shot 22% better from the 3 point line. So same shot attempts, better from the field and better from the 3 point line and more points than his season averages. That’s some improvement to close out the season.

Kel el Ware

The Miami and front office certainly have a type and Ware falls right into Petes sights. Some like blondes, some like brunettes, some like blue eyes and some prefer a nice hazel iris but the Miami Heat and Pete whip their head around when an athletic looooonnnnggggg boi walks past him on the scouting report. Ware has played sparingly as a starter this season as Pete has a solid foundation positionally. In saying all this Ware has improved this week of his season averages in the way of efficiency, points and points although not so much in the plus/minus. Another good week for a player who will be very 2k relevant over the next decade.

Terrence Shannon

PER 39.63

Eastern
3-1
Shannon was a prolific scorer in college with great size and one of the more ferocious dunkers to come out of the draft i recent years. An athlete in every sense of the word, Terrence hasn’t had the most opportunity in Cleveland this season but as injuries have piled up a spot in the rotation has opened up and its fair to say he has taken hold of the opportunity with both hands. The point per minutes in the past week were off the charts and in an award and a conference that has some quite weak nominations, Shannon hasn’t put up not only amazing scoring numbers for a rookie but if done over the whole season he would be a hot favourite for 6th man of the year. High totals and efficiency, the golden ratio.

Ryan Dunn

PER 15.14

Eastern
4-0
Ryan Dunn, the defensive stalwart and one of my personal favourite players from the most recent draft. His impact on the game can be harder to quantify as a lot of what he does will not show up on the traditional box score, this week however that wasn’t necessarily the case. Dunn has started nearly half the games he has suited up for and this week was near perfection from what you want out of the rookie. The field goal percentage and 3 point percentage are elite reserved for the best and efficient scorer in those numbers with 67% form the field and 55% from the three point line. Another glaring percentage is the free throw percentage of 25% from the free throw line which is a swing in the negative direction. His usual stats are somewhere in the middle but the defensive impact plus the efficient scoring might be enough to push Dunn into a sweaty rookie of the week contention.

Miles Norris

PER 10.44

Western
0-4
A player that has bounced around the league and is playing for his 4th team of the season and it seems the Clippers have given him the minutes to actually put up decent stats. The Clippers aren’t afraid to do a baptism by fire with their rookies giving them major minutes before they have probably earned them just to see what they’ve got. Norris shot the ball well and attacked the boards but it didn’t lead to winning this time round. Another player that the Clippers may have unearthed or maybe just showcasing for his 5th team whoever that may be.

AJ Johnson

PER 16.38

I must say before writing this I wasn’t familiar with Johnsons game but he gets his first start here for the Clippers and made the most of it getting his shots up. Not the most efficient week but AJ did a little bit of everything to contribute (just don’t look at the plus/minus). Andrew may have unearthed another gem here down the line in a microwave scorer off the bench. A nice thing to find to close the season with a bit of rebounding and a few assists per game its a nice little week put together here.

Dalton Knecht

PER 13.17

Western
0-4
Knecht shot out of the blocks to start the season but has come back to earth a little bit as the season went on but still has been as good as you can hope for from his draft position. A sharpshooter with the size that he has will have a place in the league for a long time even if he never improves from here. The past week wasn’t his best efficiency wise especially from the free throw line which seems like a big aberration but the shooting was down across the board. A player that has a big future in Dallas and to keep an eye on.

Stephon Castle

PER 15.84

Western
1-3
Another player that has straddled the season in between starting and coming off the bench but will have a big say in the future of the Memphis franchise. The past week was a bench week for castle but he still played plenty of minutes and put up his regular season averages. At his size and athleticism Castle will be hard to fail in the NSL with the upside of a Fox style 2k superstar that puts heavy pressure on the rim and using the drive  and kick approach to set up his teammates while racking up assists. Shooting the same amount of shots but shooting more from the field and reigning in the 3 point attempts is the key to Castles success now and down the line.

Zach Edey

PER 20.63

Half man, half monster. Edey is a giant in real life and even a bigger presence in game. A future piece for the Grizzlies but also a present he has started nearly all the game he has played this season and has produced at minimum starter level production which will only improve from here. A standard week for Edey with only a bump in his scoring, not saying this to take away from Edeys week as his standard week is most centres ceiling. Another solid week from a man mountain that is a huge figure in Memphis.
